Safety & Emergency Communications

MVISD is proud to make Safety & Security our top priority! To do this we must be prepared to respond to any emergency situation that may arise. Our students and staff are trained in various drills, trainings, and we have policies that regulate access control to all MVISD facilities. Additionally, we maintain a close relationship with our first responders in Medina County and Bexar County. We pride ourselves on our “security in depth” style of layered and collaborative approach to ensure all students and staff are provided safe and secure learning environments across our district sites.

We strive to make sure that every parent/guardian has the most accurate and timely information regarding emergency situations, incidents that include criminal, violent, or threatening activities, investigative matters, school closures and weather alerts. We encourage parents to provide up-to-date contact information to the school in order to allow for proper real-time notification during an emergency.

Several channels are utilized to communicate these notifications. Our primary tool is our mass notification system ParentSquare. The information distributed through ParentSquare comes directly from the contact information provided to the school during registration. We will utilize the following methods to disburse information: 

• Phone Call 
• Email 
• SMS Text Messaging 
• Social Media 

Raptor Visitor Management Alerts 

Identification is required by all campus visitors. The visitor management system scans the offender databases alerting campus staff to a possible match. The campus administrator has final authority over controlling access on their campus.

Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect

Anyone who suspects that a child has been or may be abused or neglected has a legal responsibility to report to law enforcement or Child Protective Services (CPS).  Any District employee, agent, or contractor has an additional legal obligation to submit a report to law enforcement or CPS, as applicable, within 48 hours of when the person first suspects that the child has been or may be abused or neglected. Failure to report suspected child abuse or neglect is a criminal offense. Do not try to investigate suspicions; a trained investigator will evaluate the child’s situation. You cannot delegate this responsibility to another person. All persons who suspect child abuse or neglect must make their report. 

Facilities:

 Our District provides all staff with ID Badges to ensure a controlled access and manage our visitors to our facilities. 

• We are proud of our layered security at all sites including fencing, gates, locks, signage and electronic access control systems.
• Campuses are secured with vestibules that allow for a controlled access into all of our schools, with access only through our front office’s personnel. All doors are to remain secured and checked regularly throughout the school day. 
• Our campuses also utilize extensive camera systems that are monitored at multiple district locations, MVISD Police Department, Safety Department, along with the campus itself. 

District Partnerships and the First Responder Community

• MVISD leans on our strong relationship and partnership with the Department of Public Safety, Medina County Sheriff’s office, Bexar County Sheriff's Office, Castroville Police Department, SAPD, Fire Departments, EMS, and other local and state law enforcement agencies. We also provide each campus with highly trained MVISD Police Officers and Marshals.
• MVISD does engage regularly with our Safety and Security Committee to assess safety across our district. This committee consists of staff, community members, first responders, parents, and our Board members. All community members associated with the district are encouraged to attend.

Emergency Preparedness and Response:

• At MVISD we have adopted and trained staff and students on the Standard Response Protocols provided by the “I Love You Guys Foundation”. Our campuses conduct these drills throughout the school year to ensure their safety and ability to respond in an emergency situation.
• We have also implemented the “I Love You Guys Foundations” Standard Reunification Method to ensure students to be successfully reunited with their parents or guardians following an event, should the need arise.
• Our district utilized specific drills and actions that align with state requirements and drills set forth by the county and city Fire Marshalls. These protocols are practiced district-wide and remain the same for all tiers of campuses. 
• We have provided all campuses and departments with maps, signage, and door numbering to support any emergencies that may arise at our district. All maps are checked on a regular basis for accuracy and if new numbers are needed at all doors into our buildings. 
• MVISD also maintains a multi-hazard emergency operation plan for all campuses. This outlines the specific need at a campus due to hazards on roadways, railroads, and country living. This plan is reviewed, practiced and updated regularly.
