Math Accelerated Program (MAP) and Honors

Purpose
The Medina Valley Independent School District’s Math Accelerated Program (MAP) begins in 6th grade. The program aims to identify students who excel in mathematics at an advanced pace and aspire to pursue the highest levels of mathematics while still in high school. These courses include Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC.

Plan
Students who meet the criteria as incoming 6th-grade students will complete the 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade mathematics courses in a two-year timeframe by the end of their 7th-grade year. They will then take Algebra I in their 8th-grade year. This will allow students to take an additional four years of mathematics in high school, beginning with Algebra II in 9th grade.

Qualifying Criteria

6th GRADE ENTRY INTO MAP:
  • 5th-grade STAAR score at Masters Grade Level, or
  • Students must demonstrate mastery of 5th-grade standards upon completion of a readiness assessment administered at the middle school campus. (This applies to new students from out of state and/or who did not take Grade 5 Math STAAR) This can be scheduled with the campus counselor(s).

7th GRADE ENTRY INTO MAP:
  • Incoming 6th-grade STAAR score at Masters Grade Level, or
  • Students must demonstrate mastery of 6th-grade standards upon completion of a readiness assessment administered at the middle school campus. (This applies to new students who have not received 6th grade accelerated instruction or who did not take Grade 6 Math STAAR) This can be scheduled with the campus counselor(s)
    AND
  • Successful completion of the Summer Launch course. (This course is designed to teach students the 7th-grade standards they did not learn in an accelerated 6th-grade math course, to ensure student success in the course)

For 6th Grade MAP students who want to remain in 7th Grade MAP:
  • Students must have maintained a passing grade each semester of 6th Grade MAP or have been referred to the RTI campus committee for review if their overall average fell below 70%.
  • Students must have achieved at least Meets Grade Level Performance on the 6th Grade STAAR Assessment.

8th GRADE ENTRY INTO ALGEBRA:
  • 8th-grade STAAR score at Meets Grade Level, or
  • Students must demonstrate proficiency in the 8th-grade standards upon completion of a readiness assessment administered at the middle school campus. (This applies to students who have not received accelerated math instruction in 6th and 7th grade or who have not earned 8th Grade math credit) This can be scheduled with the campus counselor(s).

For 7th Grade MAP students who want to remain in 8th Grade MAP (Algebra I):
  • Students must have maintained a passing grade each semester of 7th Grade MAP or have been referred to the RTI campus committee for review if their overall average fell below 70%.
  • Students must have achieved at least Meets Grade Level Performance on the 7th Grade STAAR Assessment.

*All STAAR assessments are validated by the State of Texas and are not subject to parent review.

Important Considerations of MAP
  • In one year of instruction, students in 6th-grade MAP receive accelerated instruction that condenses all 6th-grade math TEKS and about half of all 7th-grade math TEKS.
  • Students in 7th-grade MAP receive accelerated instruction that condenses the remaining 7th-grade math TEKS (not covered in 6th-grade MAP) and all 8th-grade math TEKS in one year of instruction.
  • As required now in Title 19 of the Texas Administrative Code (TAC), §101.3011, students who have completed STAAR EOC assessments in middle school must take either the corresponding ACT or the SAT while in high school to fulfill federal testing requirements. ALL ADVANCED TESTERS WILL take the SAT or ACT in the Spring of their junior year or Fall of their senior year if it has not been taken prior. (MVISD will pay for ONLY one administration.)
  • Although students will receive high school credit for successfully completing Algebra I in 8th grade, per board policy, their final average WILL NOT be calculated into their graduating GPA. Per board policy, in order for an Algebra I grade to impact a student’s ranking GPA, it will need to be taken while in high school.
  • The expectation of following this pathway is that students complete at least AP Calculus AB in their senior year. Below are sample course pathways* the student may take through high school. All students are expected to complete four years of math in high school.

Honors Pathway

The district is excited to offer an Honors pathway in addition to our middle school Math Accelerated Program (MAP). We feel this will continue to foster our students' academic growth and foundation. Students will be offered the opportunity to select between a Traditional, Honors, or Advanced MAP Pathway beginning in middle school. While our MAP program will maintain enrollment criteria, the proposed honors courses are open-enrollment, ensuring an option of rigorous instruction opportunities for all students across all core content areas. While students who participate in the MAP program are expected to complete calculus their senior year, students who follow the honors pathway still have the option to take Calculus in High School. To achieve this, students may double up in Algebra II and Geometry in their sophomore year. This is a more favorable option for many students because they are more developmentally prepared, and both courses last the year.

The honors pathway is recommended for students who exhibit a high interest and competency in mathematics. Honors courses address the same essential knowledge and skills for the grade level but emphasize the depth and complexity of the content. Students will be exposed to a broader scope, given more opportunities for inquiry-based learning, analysis, and application of knowledge and skills.  This pathway will allow students to continue moving to advanced and dual credit courses, including AP Calculus AB. Below are sample course pathways* the student may take through high school. All students are expected to complete four years of math in high school.

In looking at the middle school and high school pathways, you can see the multiple ways to take advanced-level mathematics courses with the possibility of achieving college credit. Students will meet with counselors annually to discuss course selections and how to achieve their goals best. If you wish for students to complete calculus in high school, the honors and accelerated pathways will allow for this. While students who participate in the MAP program are expected to complete calculus in their senior year, students who follow the honors pathway can also achieve this.
