Assessment

Welcome to MVISD's Assessment Department! This department is responsible for implementing and executing the coordination of all state assessments in an effective, efficient, and confidential manner. Mr. Reed Trosper is the MVISD District Assessment Coordinator.  He provides support, information, and technical assistance across the district and is a part of the Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment Department.
 
 
State Assessments supported through this office are: STAAR, STAAR Alternate 2 and TELPAS.
STAAR
The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) program includes STAAR (grades 3-8 and end-of course) and STAAR Spanish (grades 3-5). All grades/subjects and courses of STAAR (English only) can be administered on paper or online with or without embedded supports. STAAR is an assessment designed to measure the extent to which students have learned and are able to apply the knowledge and skills defined in the state-mandated curriculum, the TEKS.
STAAR Alternate 2
STAAR Alternate 2 is an assessment based on alternate academic achievement standards and is designed for students with significant cognitive disabilities receiving special education services. STAAR Alternate 2 is administered in the same grades/subjects and courses as STAAR.
TELPAS
TELPAS assesses the progress that ELLs in K-12 make in acquiring the English language in the domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

You can access your child’s score by going to https://www.texasassessment.gov/staar.html. The site will prompt you for your child’s first name, portal access code, and date of birth. If you have forgotten your family portal code it can be retrieved at the following website by logging into Skyward:

You can also access your child’s score by logging in to your Skyward Family Access account. Select District Links on the top right. From the dropdown select TEA Assessment (Your child’s name). This will take you directly to the Texas Assessment website.

School districts are required to provide at least one window each quarter for students to test, unless the exam selected by the district has a different administration schedule. Students may take a specific exam only once during each testing window. A school district is prohibited from charging a fee for credit by examination. A school district must provide opportunities for a student who is homeless or in substitute care who transfers to the district after the start of the school year to be administered a CBE at any point during the school year.

Procedures for Kindergarten Acceleration
Credit by Examination for Advancement/Acceleration — If a Student Has Not Taken the Course/Subject A student will be permitted to earn credit by examination for an academic course or subject area for which the student had no prior instruction for advancement or to accelerate to the next grade level. The examinations offered by the district are approved by the district’s board of trustees. Testing windows for these examinations will be published in district publications and on the district’s website. A student may take a specific examination only once per testing window. The only exceptions to the published testing windows will be for examinations administered by another entity or to accommodate a student experiencing homelessness or a student involved in the foster care system. When another entity administers an examination, the student and the district must comply with the testing schedule of the other entity. If a student plans to take an examination, the student or parent must register with the school counselor no later than 30 days prior to the scheduled testing date. [See policy EHDC for more information.] Kindergarten Acceleration Districts must develop procedures to be approved by the local board of trustees for kindergarten acceleration. MVISD Procedures for Kindergarten Acceleration (In accordance with policy EHDC LOCAL). Students in Grades 1-5 A student in elementary school is eligible to accelerate to the next grade level if:  • The student scores at least an 80 on each examination in the subject areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies; • A district administrator recommends that the student be accelerated; and  • The student’s parent gives written approval of the grade advancement. Students in Grades 6-12 A student in grade 6 or above is eligible to earn course credit with: • A passing score of at least 80 on an examination approved by the board; or • A scaled score of 50 or higher on an examination administered through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP); or  • A score of 3 or higher on an AP examination, as applicable.  A student may take an examination to earn high school course credit no more than twice. If a student fails to achieve the designated score on the applicable exam before the beginning of the school year in which the student would need to enroll in the course according to the school’s high school course sequence, the student must complete the course.
