Pregnancy, Education and Parenting (PEP)
Program Handbook
Medina Valley ISD
Pregnant and parenting students are entitled
to all Pregnancy, Education and Parenting (PEP) and Pregnancy Related
Services (PRS) program services offered by the Medina Valley ISD
that assist them in achieving academic success through graduation
while learning to manage the responsibilities of parenthood.
Pregnant
and parenting students frequently encounter health, family, emotional
and financial problems which threaten to interrupt or end school
attendance. Medina Valley ISD offers a support system designed to
assist students and parents to assess pregnancy related and academic
issues, monitor student progress and provide appropriate interventions
when needed. Key staff members and their roles in this coordinated
effort are described below.
School
Nurse
The school nurse will provide health related
services to pregnant and parenting students.
Initiates
Pregnancy Related Services (PRS) using Prenatal Physical Form
and Authorization for Release.
Verifies
pregnancy with physician.
Initiates
PEIMS form, attaches PRS documentation and forwards to PEP
Facilitator.
Notifies
parent(s), PEP Campus Facilitator
Gives
student PEP Services Brochure and Parent Request for Enrollment
& Placement Form
Obtains
health history and monitors student health care.
Assists
with prenatal, health and parenting education.
Notifies
PEP
Facilitator of Date of Delivery.

PEP
Facilitator
The campus facilitator works individually
with each student to provide academic and social service support
in order to prevent dropouts, absenteeism and promote student success.
PEP Enrollment form
Describes program services and benefits to student and parents.
Gives or assists student with completion of PEP Services Brochure
and Parent Request for Enrollment & Placement Form. Verifies
parental status of student.
Sets up
PEP enrollment meeting in order to provide appropriate services
or classes to student and notifies teachers, social worker and counselors
as appropriate.
Completes
PEIMS form and forwards to PEIMS clerk.
Arranges
for social services support to include:
Daycare
Transportation
Works
individually with students as a mentor to:
Monitor
attendance.
Monitor
grades
Review
graduation plan and set educational/vocational goals
Coordinates
prenatal, health and parenting education.
Coordinates with
Director of Personnel to identify and recruit certified CEHI teachers.
Initiates
CEHI (Compensatory Education Home
Instruction) services. Verify Date of Delivery and provides information
and technical assistance to CEHI teacher.
Notifies
Attendance Office of CEHI begin date.
Notifies
Attendance Office of CEHI end date and completes PEIMS sheet to
end PRS services.
Recruits
and negotiates contracts with daycare providers.
Performs
minimum annual site visit to all daycare providers.
Maintains
electronic and written program documentation in conjunction with
school nurse and federal programs coordinator. Submits monthly overall
report to federal programs coordinator.
Holds
periodic PEP Committee meetings for program evaluation and improvement.
Coordinates
funding and resources support for programs.

Social
Worker
The social worker provides social service
and counseling support.
Provides
counseling services as determined on PEP Meeting form.
Assists
school nurse with notifying parent(s) and teachers with student
permission.
Provides
crisis intervention as needed.
Provide
social services support to student including:
Referral
to social service agencies, including WIC.
Facilitate
transportation to social service agencies and health care providers.

CEHI
(Compensatory Education Home Instruction) Teacher
The
CEHI teacher provides academic services to the student at home when
complications of pregnancy prevent the student from attending school,
during the postpartum and/or during an extended postpartum period.
Contacts the PRS
student immediately following notification by PEP facilitator.
Provides
four or more hours of CEHI per week for the student to be counted
present for five days for ADA (in a five-day week).
Provides instruction,
support and encouragement to the pregnant and/or parenting student.
Coordinates with
campus contact for classroom teachers’ educational assignments.
Maintains
required documentation of student’s assignments and uses Weekly
Attendance Log.
Collaborates with
PEP facilitator regarding student’s return to school and/or notification
of complications requiring intervention or referral to Special Programs.
Submits weekly record
of hours as required.

Faculty
and Staff
Provides
academic and intervention support.
Refers pregnant students
to school nurse for PRS services.
Refers parent students to PEP facilitator
for information regarding PEP program benefits.
Refers student to
PEP facilitator for
excessive absences, poor academic performance and/or social service
needs.
Complies with requirements for modifications as determined by Intervention
or ARD committee.
Works with PEP facilitator to provide resources such as classroom
space, community or vocational speakers, specialized programs or
classes as requested through campus administrator.

Counselor
The
campus counselor will provide academic and vocational assessment
and counseling related services to pregnant and parenting students.
Acts
as backup for PEP facilitator during enrollment meetings as needed.
Facilitates schedule
changes as appropriate.
Assists
students in the evaluation of their graduation plan to best meet
their needs for parenting and job readiness.
Provides career counseling
to individuals and groups.
Coordinates
with PEP facilitator for programmatic and classroom support.

Federal
Programs Coordinator
The federal programs coordinator is responsible for
the overall coordination of the program.
Interprets
goals, objectives, guidelines and procedures of the PEP/PRS programs.
Approves
CEHI services for pregnant students experiencing pre/postnatal complications.
Reviews
monthly report to verify PEIMS reports.
Reviews
site visit reports to ensure quality services.
Completes
required program evaluations.
Approves
funding and resources support for programs.
